Postdocs and Graduate Students
We welcome MS and PhD applicants through the Energy and Resources Group, and work with postdocs at UC Berkeley and through projects at Berkeley Lab. Members of the group are curious, driven and independent, but also prioritize collaboration, and often work with collaborators at Berkeley Lab and other institutions in the US and internationally.
Students at ERG are funded on grants, as teaching assistants, and with research fellowships they apply for such as:
The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based Master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions.
The DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program prepares graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories.
The Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology program supports graduate student-designed and performed research projects that contribute to the NASA Science Mission Directorate’s science, technology, and exploration goals.
The Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program supports a Network of more than 600 Switzer Fellows who are leaders in the nonprofit, public policy, business, academic and government sectors working to solve today’s environmental challenges.
Undergraduates
We host undergraduates seeking field, lab or computational experience studying climate change and ecosystem dynamics. We primarily recruit undergraduates through the following programs:
UC Berkeley’s Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR) offers Sponsored Projects for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) for RCNR students who want to pursue independent research.
UC Berkeley’s Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) is open to all Berkeley undergraduates who are interested in gaining research experience.
Berkeley Lab offers DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) for undergraduates from 2- and 4-year colleges. These are open for Summer, Fall and Spring terms, and are open to graduating seniors. Contact us directly if you apply to this opportunity.
The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory offers a number of independent research opportunities in summer, including an NSF-sponsored REU program.
